Copy the information your original listing already holds for brand, size, color, material, and condition into eBay’s corresponding fields, and pull the rest from the item’s tags and a tape measure. The tags on the item matter most. Poshmark, Mercari, and Depop never ask for the type of material used on the outer shell, the country of manufacture, or style, and eBay’s category filters use those fields to sort and group listings.

## Before you start: what your old listing gives you and what it doesn't

A listing on Poshmark, Mercari or Depop typically captures about half of what eBay requires because they request a short set of fields and leave the rest for a description. When you pick a category on eBay, they will show you item specifics that are usually required. The listing will not be published without them. Others are recommended or optional. Items typically required for a jacket are Brand, Size, Size Type, Type and Department. The recommended can be 20 or more.

Here is how the fields you already have line up with eBay's.

| eBay item specific | Poshmark | Mercari | Depop | Where to find it if missing |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Brand | Brand field | Brand field | Brand field | Neck label |
| Size | Size field | Size field | Size field | Neck or side seam label |
| Size Type (Regular, Petite, Plus, Tall) | Size category | Usually missing | Usually missing | Size label, e.g. MP or 1X |
| Department | Category (Women, Men, Kids) | Category | Category | Your judgment and the label |
| Color | Up to two colors | Color field | Color field | The item itself |
| Outer Shell Material | Description only | Description only | Description only | Care label |
| Lining Material | Rarely listed | Rarely listed | Rarely listed | Care label |
| Country of Manufacture | Rarely listed | Rarely listed | Rarely listed | Care label |
| Style, Closure, Features | Description only | Description only | Style tags, sometimes | The item itself |
| Condition | NWT or not | New, Like new, Good, Fair, Poor | Condition field | Your own inspection |

Take a moment to consider your options. eBay offers a selection for used clothing from New with tags, New without tags, and New with defects, to Pre-Owned. Some clothing categories allow Pre-owned to be further broken down to Excellent, Good or Fair condition. Usually Pre-owned Excellent maps to a Like new condition on Mercari, and Good maps to Good condition on Mercari. Use a new condition only if the item has truly never been worn.

You will need the actual item being sold, clear photos of all of the labels, a soft tape measure, and your original listing in a new tab. If the item is already shipped to a storage bin, make sure to pull it out. You cannot guess at the material or country of manufacture. If you are not sure, it is best to assume that it will be returned as not as described.

## Steps: from the old listing to a finished set of eBay specifics

You must enter item specifics in a particular order every time, as the category you select determines the order of the fields eBay presents you with. The steps below are the manual method. They will take you approximately 5 to 8 minutes per item, after you do a few.

1. Copy the title, brand, size, color and condition of the items listed on Poshmark, Mercari and Depop, respectively, into your notes file or sheet.
2. When creating a new eBay listing, write a short title with just the brand and type of item. eBay will suggest a category for you.
3. Pick the most specific category offered, for example Women's Coats, Jackets and Vests rather than Women's Clothing.
4. Fill Brand exactly as the label spells it, choosing from eBay's dropdown when the brand appears there.
5. Keep Fill Size and Size Type separate, e.g. a Poshmark size of M Petite becomes Size M and Size Type Petite.
6. Set Department to Women, Men, Unisex Adults or the matching kids option.
7. Choose Type from eBay's list, such as Fleece Jacket, Puffer Jacket or Jean Jacket, instead of typing your own.
8. Enter Color as the single dominant color, and save secondary colors for the title or description.
9. Turn the garment inside out and read the care label to find the information about Outer Shell Material, Lining Material, and Country of Manufacture.
10. Look at the item for Closure, Style, Pattern, Features and Sleeve Length, and fill each one in clearly if the item shows it.
11. Measure each part (pit to pit and length) and add to the description because eBay buyers often request these measurements. Poshmark buyers don't request measurements as often.
12. Map your old condition to eBay's condition options and write any flaws in the condition description box.
13. Scroll through the remaining optional specifics and fill any you can confirm, leaving blanks rather than guesses.
14. Review the preview, then list.

These two habits will save you time. Use eBay’s dropdown values when they are available, because a typed value like Blk may not match the Black filter that buyers click. And if a field doesn’t apply, leave it blank.

## Worked example: one fleece jacket from Mercari to eBay

The following is a step-by-step review of what took place in the sale of a women's The North Face Denali fleece from Mercari, which took five weeks. The listing included five relevant fields: Brand The North Face, Size M, Color Black, Condition Good, and Category Women, Coats and Jackets. The description said it was a warm zip-up fleece with pockets, with light pilling near the cuffs.

I listed The North Face Denali Fleece on eBay under Women's Coats, Jackets and Vests and got the required fields of Brand, Size, Size Type, Department and Type. The Brand field automatically filled in The North Face and I selected from a drop down. The Size field became M, and Size Type became Regular, because the neck label didn’t have a P or Plus marking. The Department field became Women, and Type became Fleece Jacket from eBay’s suggestions.

The color of the jacket was black but there was gray nylon on the shoulder seams so I put Gray in the title and description and left color as black. The care label was 100% polyester body and 100% nylon overlays made in Vietnam. So I put the Outer Shell Material as Polyester, Country of Manufacture as Vietnam and left Lining Material as none because the jacket is unlined.

Looking at the jacket filled in the next group:

- Closure: Full Zip
- Style: Fleece Jacket
- Features: Pockets, Zip Pockets, Lightweight
- Pattern: Solid
- Sleeve Length: Long
- Accents: Logo
- Vintage: No

The tape measure gave 20.5" pit to pit and 25" shoulder seam to hem and both were included in the description with a line saying the measurement was flat.

For condition, Mercari Good mapped to eBay Pre-owned Good. The condition box said: light pilling at both cuffs, no holes, zippers work, no stains. The insulation material, theme and character were left blank. The final count was 5 required fields and 11 recommended fields filled, vs the 5 that Mercari had captured. The whole process took 7 minutes, and 3 minutes of those were spent finding and reading the care label.

Since the jacket was now live on both Mercari and eBay, it now had to be watched. If it sold on one site, it had to be taken down from the other site of the same day.

## Checklist: what to verify before the eBay listing goes live

Keep this checklist near the keyboard and run through it for every item you move to eBay, because the same 4 or 5 fields are always missed. Most of the mistakes it catches are from copying a field that meant something slightly different on the original site.

- Category is the most specific one eBay offered.
- All required specifics are filled in, with no red flags left on the form.
- If the brand existed on the dropdown, it was selected and spelling was matched to the label.
- Size and Size Type are in different fields, and Petite, Plus, or Tall are no longer part of Size.
- Department is aligned with your category and label.
- Type and Style are on eBay's preset list, not on yours.
- Color is the dominant color with secondary colors in the description.
- Outer Shell Material, Lining Material and Country of Manufacture were read from the care label.
- Potential closures, patterns, and sleeve lengths and features, were pulled from the photos.
- Pit to pit and length measurements are in the description, with units provided.
- Condition was mapped to fit their definitions: Like new to Pre-owned Excellent, Good to Pre-owned Good, and nothing worn was listed as new.
- Flaws in Condition box are pulled from pictures.
- Fields you couldn't confirm are left blank. Best guesses are not made.
- The initial Poshmark, Mercari, or Depop listing is still accurate or has been modified and/or edited to reflect any new information provided by the tag.

The last sentence is probably the most helpful: When you read a care label for eBay, you often find material or country of origin that may also help with the initial listing. Add that to the original listing too.

Track where it sold and where it's still posted on the other sites. For less than 50 crosslisted items, a simple sheet with columns for item, site and status works well. Check it for each sale notification and delist the twin listing within the hour. Beyond that, the sheet begins failing. One missed delist means you have to cancel an order on eBay, and seller-cancelled orders count against your seller performance.

## Crosslist to eBay and keep it in sync with PrimeLister

Of the crosslisting work, inputting item specifics is worth doing, as only you understand your tags. The repetitive work surrounding this is posting to the various sites and removing the listing once it's sold. This work increases with each additional item. PrimeLister does the repetitive work to post to the various sites, leaving you to concentrate on the details buyers care about on eBay to describe the jacket.

- Crosslists to Poshmark, eBay, Mercari, Depop, Etsy and Facebook Marketplace to get the item in buyers' hands wherever they shop.
- Inventory sync with auto-delisting once it sells replaces the sold-items sheet, and eliminates the work to track missed delists.
- Bulk actions for listing multiple items at a time on eBay.
- Find out if you've accidentally posted the same item twice with our free duplicate finding tool.
- Understand your sell-through rate, as well as average time on market to identify which items to move to other listing sites.
